About Botanical Garden

Botanical Garden is situated about 2 Kms. away from Waghai, on Waghai-Saputara Road in District Dangs, Gujarat State. It Spreads over an area of 24 Hac. It is the largest garden in Gujarat. It was established in 1966.This Botanical Garden has systematic network of roads spreading 7 Kms in length. This area receives about 1600 mm to 2000 mm rainfall during rainy season. Average minimum and maximum temperatures are 10°C to 45°C.

Objectives of the Garden

Rescue : Ex-situ Conservation of Rare, Endangered and Endemic species. Recovery : Multiplication of valuable plant genetic resources. Rehabilitation : To reintroduce plants in natural habitats in collaboration with State Forest Department in regular plantation programme. Education : Serve as center of training, with expertise in ethno-botany and medicinal plants. Research : Undertake botanical research and develop excellent referral system for plants dried and live condition, with documentation of natural resources of the South Gujarat. Awareness : To promote education and public awareness. The Botanical Garden is divided into different plots, which represent the forest types occurring in India as classified by Champion and Seth. Evergreen Plot :This Forest type occurs in Southern and North East part of India. The vegetation comprises Callophylum Mesua, Artocarpus etc., This plot has 328 species. Moist Deciduous Plot : This forest type occurs in South India : Dangs District in Gujarat, M.P. Thana division in Maharastra, Karnataka, Coimbatore, North India : Uttar-Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, Bengal, and Assam and Andaman.The vegetation comprises of Largerstromia, Shorea, Tectomic, Dillenia. Albizia etc. This plot has 323 species. Dry Deciduous Plot : This forest occurs in M.P., Gujarat, A.P., Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Punjab, etc. The vegetation comprises of Terninalia, Anogeissus, Diosphyros, Semicarpus, etc. This plot has 42 species. Scrub and Thorn Plot : This is forest type occurs in M.P., Maharastra, A.P. and Rajasthan. The vegetation comprises of Acacia, Randia Zizyphus, Euphorbias etc. This Plot has 101 species. Arid Zone Plot : This forest type occurs in North Gujarat and Rajasthan. The vegetation comprises of Cappris, Tamrix, Tecomella, Euphorbias, Perennial grasses etc. Taxonomy Plot : Taxonomy is the identification nomenclature and classification of plant kingdom. There are 123 species. Medicinal Plot : This plot was added to the garden in subsequent years of its formation. It has collection of 257 species which have medicinal usages in Ayurveda, Unani Homeopathy and modern medicines. Bamboo Stump : Nearly 100 different species of bamboos are known to occur in the world these 21 species are found in different regions of India. The bamboos setum has 5 different species of bamboos found in India. Palmetum : Botanical Garden has 7 species of Palm. Dangs Plot : This plot represents the species occurring naturally in the forest of Dangs district, where the garden is located. It has 468 species. Cacti and Succulent : Many rare varieties of Cactii and Succulents are seen in the Cactus House. This plot has total 142 species. Orchid Museum : It has different variety of Orchids. Biodiversity Center : It is shows biodiversity of District Dangs. Research and Demonstration Center :

Rose Plot : It has 4 variety of Roses.
